AS Monaco’s attempt to secure a loan deal for West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez has been turned down, though discussions between the clubs are reportedly ongoing.
Edson Álvarez, the 27-year-old Mexico international, has emerged as a key target for AS Monaco as they look to strengthen their midfield for the second half of the season. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Ligue 1 side submitted a loan proposal for Álvarez, but it was swiftly rejected by West Ham United, who view the midfielder as an integral part of their squad.
Since joining the Hammers, Álvarez has been a consistent performer, making 19 appearances this season and playing a pivotal role in the club’s Premier League campaign. His form and importance to the team make him a difficult player for West Ham to part with, even temporarily.
Monaco’s interest in Álvarez stems from their need for midfield reinforcements, particularly with Eliot Matazo potentially leaving during the January transfer window. Additionally, with the club still competing in the UEFA Champions League, bolstering their midfield is seen as a priority.
While their initial offer has been rejected, Les Monégasques remain eager to strike a deal and are reportedly continuing negotiations with West Ham.
Whether the English side would entertain a permanent transfer or a revised loan offer remains unclear.
