Fenerbahçe's €7 million signing Ognjen Mimović joins Maribor on loan after exceeding the Turkish club's foreign player quota.
In a surprise move, Fenerbahçe has decided to loan out their latest signing, Ognjen Mimović, to Maribor. The 20-year-old Serbian full-back, who was recently bought from Crvena zvezda for nearly €7 million, will join the Slovenian side until the end of the season.
Turkish media were buzzing on Thursday evening with reports that Fenerbahçe was looking to offload a foreign player to comply with the league's foreign player quota. According to sources, Mimović has been deemed surplus to requirements for now, and Acun Ilicali, part-owner of Fenerbahçe, has facilitated his move to Maribor.
This will be Maribor's second loan deal from the Turkish giants after Bartug Elmaz, the Turkish youth international. Mimović’s arrival will strengthen the right-back position at Maribor, adding competition for Pijus Širvys. Martin Milec, who has been on the fringes of the squad, will face even more challenges in securing playing time.
Mimović made a name for himself during Crvena zvezda's Champions League campaign, and his move to Fenerbahçe was seen as a significant step forward in his career. Now, he will continue his development in Slovenia, bringing a high level of quality and European experience to Maribor’s squad.
