French star Theo Hernandez becomes AC Milan’s highest-scoring defender in history, surpassing Paolo Maldini ahead of a crucial derby clash with Juventus.
Theo Hernandez reached a remarkable milestone by scoring his 30th goal for AC Milan, surpassing the legendary Paolo Maldini as the club’s all-time highest-scoring defender. This significant achievement comes just days before Milan’s much-anticipated Serie A derby against Juventus in Turin.
The 27-year-old Frenchman netted the decisive goal in Milan’s 2-1 victory over Como, ensuring another three points for his team. Alongside Rafael Leao, who also found the net, Hernandez played a key role in maintaining Milan’s unbeaten streak under new coach Sergio Conceicao. The Portuguese manager has made an impressive start, recording three wins and one draw since taking over.
Surpassing a legend
With 30 goals to his name, Hernandez has etched his place in Milan’s history books, surpassing Maldini’s tally of 29 goals. Maldini, widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time, not only captained Milan during a golden era but also served as the club’s sporting director. It was Maldini who brought Hernandez to Milan in 2019, signing him from Real Madrid.
Originally a youth product of Atletico Madrid, Hernandez struggled for regular playing time at Real Madrid before finding his footing in Italy. Since his arrival at Milan, he has developed into one of the best full-backs in Europe, combining defensive solidity with attacking prowess.
Crucial derby against Juventus
Hernandez’s record-breaking performance comes at a pivotal moment, as Milan prepares for a crucial derby clash against Juventus on Saturday. With Milan sitting near the top of the table, a positive result in Turin could bolster their title ambitions. Juventus, always a formidable opponent, will be looking to halt Milan’s unbeaten run under Conceicao.
Given Hernandez’s current form and his growing influence on the pitch, he will undoubtedly be a key figure for Milan as they aim to secure another important victory in their quest for domestic success.
