Edoardo Bove’s football future is uncertain after a cardiac arrest revealed a heart condition. Could the Fiorentina midfielder follow Christian Eriksen's path and move abroad?
Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove (22) faces an uncertain future in football after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match against Inter. Although his condition has stabilized and he feels well, doctors are conducting extensive tests on his medical and genetic history to determine the underlying cause of the incident.
A troubling scar and questions from the past
The main concern for Bove's future lies in a small scar on his heart, detected through a recent cardiac MRI. This scar, located near the left ventricle, may stem from an older, previously undiagnosed issue.
Adding to the complexity, doctors are investigating whether the cardiac arrest could be linked to myocarditis Bove developed in 2020, following a COVID-19 infection. Back then, the condition was treated successfully with corticosteroids and rest, with no visible aftereffects in subsequent routine tests. However, new second-level diagnostic scans conducted after the recent episode revealed the scar.
Currently, Bove remains under close observation in the intensive care unit of a cardiology department. Further tests, including DNA analysis, aim to uncover any underlying genetic conditions, such as cardiomyopathy, that might explain the event.
Similarities to Christian Eriksen’s case
Doctors have informed Bove’s family about the possibility of implanting a subcutaneous defibrillator, a device that acts like a pacemaker and can deliver life-saving electrical shocks in the event of a dangerous arrhythmia.
This approach is reminiscent of the treatment Danish star Christian Eriksen received after his cardiac arrest during Euro 2020. However, strict Italian medical regulations prohibited Eriksen from continuing to play in Serie A with the device, prompting him to move his career to the Premier League.
Bove’s future at a crossroads
If Bove’s case mirrors Eriksen’s, the young midfielder may be forced to leave Italy to continue his career abroad. Final decisions will hinge on the results of more advanced tests, which could take at least a month to complete.
Bove, who came through Roma’s academy, is currently on loan at Fiorentina. Despite his promising talent, his future in football now hangs in the balance, pending further clarity on his medical condition.
