Spanish midfielder Stefan Bajčetić, of Serbian descent, could cut short his loan at Salzburg following coaching changes and limited opportunities.
Stefan Bajčetić, the 20-year-old Spanish midfielder of Serbian heritage, may end his loan stint at Salzburg just six months after joining the Austrian club from Liverpool. Reports suggest that the recent dismissal of coach Pep Lijnders, the man who brought him to Salzburg, is a key factor behind his potential departure.
Limited opportunities in Austria
Bajčetić, who made his senior debut for Liverpool in 2022, was loaned to Salzburg in the summer to gain experience. However, he has struggled for consistent minutes, despite featuring in 18 matches this season. Salzburg’s disappointing performances—currently sitting fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga and exiting the Champions League with one win in six games—have prompted management to reassess their squad.
The departure of Lijnders, formerly an assistant to Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool and well-acquainted with Bajčetić’s qualities, has further cast doubt on the midfielder’s future in Salzburg.
A return to Spain on the cards?
Bajčetić has reportedly attracted interest from Real Betis, who are looking to bolster their midfield options. A move back to Spain could provide the young midfielder with a fresh start and more regular playing time.
