Diego Simeone, manager of Atletico Madrid, has openly commented on the controversial refereeing decisions that clouded Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey victory against Celta Vigo.

The match saw Real advance to the quarter-finals with a 5-2 win, but not without controversy surrounding the opening goal.

Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe scored the first goal in a sequence marred by a contentious decision. Earlier in the same play, Celta Vigo claimed they were denied a clear penalty. Despite protests, the referee did not review the incident on the VAR screen, leaving Celta Vigo frustrated.

When asked about the incident, Simeone did not hold back, delivering a pointed remark:

“I didn’t watch yesterday’s game. They told me episodes that happened as have been going on for a hundred years. I don’t know what surprises you…”

With Atletico Madrid currently sitting atop the La Liga table, Simeone was asked whether his famous ‘game by game’ philosophy lacked ambition. The Argentine responded with humor, acknowledging the criticism:

“Yes, sure, it’s not very ambitious,” he said, laughing.

On the possibility of new arrivals during the January transfer window, Simeone was tight-lipped, offering only a cryptic response: “Leganes.” While no further explanation was given, the remark could hint at ongoing discussions or scouting in that direction.

Simeone also addressed the future of left-back Reinildo Mandava, who has seen limited playing time recently. Despite the lack of minutes, the manager praised Reinildo’s attitude:

“Today it is Reinildo’s turn to go through this stage, who is always prepared for whatever is asked of him. He knows what this situation is and is 100% committed to the team. I’m calm. I know that he is a boy who will no doubt help us when we need him.”

While Atletico continues their strong campaign, Simeone’s comments on Real Madrid’s game reflect the underlying tensions between the two clubs, particularly as Atletico fights to maintain their position at the top of the table.
