Xherdan Shaqiri scores his first career hat-trick at 33 as Basel beats Servette 3-1, climbing to the top of the Swiss Super League.
FC Basel, after years of struggle, is once again emerging as a dominant force in Swiss football, and much of the credit goes to Xherdan Shaqiri.
The club last lifted the Swiss Super League trophy in the 2016/17 season, only to endure a period of decline as Young Boys claimed the throne. Basel hit rock bottom during the 2022/23 season, finishing in a disappointing fifth place. But this season marks a resurgence for the club, largely thanks to the return of Shaqiri, who rejoined his boyhood team this summer after a decade abroad.
Shaqiri produced a masterclass last night, scoring all three goals in Basel’s 3-1 victory over Servette, marking the first hat-trick of his career at the age of 33. His exceptional performance has propelled Basel to the top of the Swiss Super League standings.
The Swiss international has been in scintillating form this season, contributing five goals and seven assists in just 11 league appearances, proving that his return to Basel was far more than a sentimental move.
