The 2024 Ballon d’Or debate continues into 2025, with Spanish midfielder Rodri addressing comments made by Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Manchester City star, who claimed the prestigious award last year, responded to Ronaldo's suggestion that Vinicius Junior was a more deserving recipient.
In an interview, Ronaldo shared his thoughts: "In my opinion, Vinicius deserved the award more. I didn't think the selection was fair. Rodri won the Ballon d’Or, and he deserved it too, but I would give it to Vinicius, who also won the Champions League and scored in the grand final."
Rodri, sidelined due to injury, reacted to Ronaldo's remarks, seemingly unimpressed by the criticism. The Spanish international stated: "This year they voted for me. I'm sure the journalists voted for him once when he was collecting the Ballons d’Or, but I don't remember him being bothered by anything."
The comments have reignited discussions over the award, with many arguing that Vinicius Junior’s performance—highlighted by his contributions to Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph—made him a strong candidate. However, Rodri’s pivotal role in Manchester City's historic treble-winning season, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, ultimately earned him the recognition.
Rodri’s absence due to injury has been felt by Manchester City, who find themselves underperforming in the Premier League, currently sitting in sixth place. While debates over the Ballon d’Or linger, the midfielder’s focus will likely remain on recovering and helping his team regain their form.
