Borussia Dortmund are closing in on a deal for Chelsea’s versatile left-back Renato Veiga, with personal terms already agreed and negotiations ongoing for a potential transfer.

Borussia Dortmund have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Renato Veiga regarding personal terms, according to journalist Patrick Berger. The 21-year-old Portuguese defender has emerged as a key target for Dortmund as they seek to reinforce the left side of their backline, which has been plagued by injuries.

Dortmund’s plan for Veiga

Veiga, who can operate as a left-back, center-back, and defensive midfielder, offers the versatility Dortmund need to address their squad depth issues. The Bundesliga club is currently exploring a loan deal with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

This approach reflects lessons learned from last season’s loan move for Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen, who shone during a six-month spell at Dortmund but returned to the Premier League after Dortmund failed to secure a purchase option. The lack of such an option allowed Aston Villa to swoop in for Maatsen as his valuation surged following his performances under Edin Terzić.

Negotiations with Chelsea

While Veiga and Dortmund have agreed on personal terms, the deal hinges on securing Chelsea’s approval. Given Dortmund’s desire to avoid a repeat of the Maatsen situation, adding a purchase option to the loan agreement could be crucial.

Veiga would bring additional stability to Dortmund’s squad, providing cover across multiple positions as the club pushes for success in domestic and European competitions.
