Quincy Promes, facing legal issues and awaiting extradition, is set to join Dubai United on a one-year deal after leaving Spartak Moscow.
Former Spartak Moscow footballer Quincy Promes is currently in Dubai, undergoing medical exams before signing with second-division side Dubai United. The Dubai club confirmed the news via a video posted on their social media accounts.
Dutch media reported that Promes will sign a one-year contract with the club. The player is currently staying in the United Arab Emirates due to ongoing criminal proceedings against him in the country, according to Dutch outlet NOS.
Promes was first arrested in Dubai on February 29th while training with Spartak Moscow after fleeing the scene of a car accident he caused. Twelve days later, he was arrested again at the request of the Dutch authorities.
Promes, who is considered a fugitive in the Netherlands, faces extradition due to two criminal convictions. The Dutch government has requested his extradition from the UAE, which has had an extradition agreement with the Netherlands since 2021.
While awaiting the court’s decision on extradition, Promes is allowed to remain free in the UAE. In 2023, Promes was sentenced to 18 months in prison for assaulting his cousin with a knife during a brawl in 2020. Earlier, in February, he was sentenced to six years in prison for drug trafficking, linked to an attempt to smuggle hundreds of kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp in 2020. Promes has appealed both sentences.
Russia does not have an extradition treaty with the Netherlands, which allowed Promes to continue playing for Spartak Moscow for the past three seasons without legal consequences. However, Spartak terminated his contract when it became clear he could not leave the UAE due to the ongoing criminal case.
Russian media suggest that Promes’s contract with Dubai United includes an option to return to Spartak without a transfer fee if he is allowed to leave the UAE.
In his career, Promes has played for Spartak Moscow, Sevilla, Ajax, and Twente, and has earned 50 caps for the Netherlands national team, scoring seven goals. Across two stints with Spartak Moscow, he played 235 matches and scored 114 goals.
