Dutch footballer Quincy Promes is set to have an extradition hearing next week to face charges in the Netherlands related to cocaine trafficking and an alleged attempted murder of a relative.
An extradition hearing for Dutch professional footballer Quincy Promes is likely to take place next week to determine whether he will be handed over to authorities in the Netherlands, according to Dutch broadcaster RTL Nieuws citing court documents.
Promes, a former Ajax player and Dutch national team member, was arrested a month ago at an airport in Dubai on charges by local authorities and due to his name appearing on Interpol’s list of known fugitives.
The extradition proceedings are expected to commence on May 2, RTL reported.
Promes was in Dubai attending a training camp with his current team, Spartak Moscow, when he was detained following a traffic violation.
Dutch TV notes that Promes left the scene of an accident and failed to pay for the damage incurred. Initially, he was allowed to await his extradition hearing on bail, but was taken back into custody last month.
In February, Promes was sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in international drug trafficking and had previously received an 18-month sentence for attempting to murder a family member.
Promes has appealed both cases. The Amsterdam Court of Appeals is scheduled to hold a status conference concerning the accused on September 20.
