João Cancelo has revealed the painful memories that continue to haunt him, opening up about the tragic death of his mother and the terrifying robbery he survived in his own home.
The Portugal international made the emotional confession during an appearance on the television program Alta Definição, offering a rare glimpse into the personal struggles behind his successful football career.
A violent attack at home
Cancelo recalled the traumatic night when armed intruders entered his home and attacked him during a robbery.
The defender explained that he initially tried to fight back.
"I managed to hit one in the back of the head, and the knife fell to the floor."
"Then another one came up behind me and hit me in the head with an iron rod. I got eight stitches and lost consciousness."
The ordeal became even more frightening after he woke up.
"I passed out, and when I woke up, there was a knife against my neck."
The incident shocked the football world at the time and left a lasting impact on the experienced defender.
The tragedy that changed everything
However, Cancelo revealed that the deepest wound in his life came many years earlier.
The Portuguese star lost his mother in a devastating car accident when he was still a child, a moment he says remains vivid in his memory to this day.
"In a split second, my life changed forever."
"I remember my mother's last scream and my eight-year-old brother crying."
Cancelo also described the desperate moments immediately after the crash.
"I tried to lift the car to get her out, but I couldn't. It's impossible to lift the car."
