Mauricio Pochettino’s first match as head coach of the US men’s national team ended in a 2-0 victory over Panama, with goals from Yunus Musah and Ricardo Pepi.

Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino kicked off his tenure as head coach of the United States men’s national team with a 2-0 win over Panama in Austin, Texas. Appointed last month, the former Tottenham, PSG, and Chelsea manager has taken on the task of leading the USMNT as they prepare to co-host the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico.

The US secured the win with goals from AC Milan midfielder Yunus Musah in the 49th minute and PSV Eindhoven forward Ricardo Pepi in stoppage time. Reflecting on his debut, Pochettino said, “It’s a very good feeling. It was a very tough match for us. We’re building something step by step, with the goal being 2026. I’m pleased with our solid, professional performance today, but it’s just the first step.”

Next up, Pochettino’s team faces a more challenging test on Tuesday as they travel to Guadalajara to play Mexico, whose new coach, Javier Aguirre, recently took charge for his third spell with El Tri.
