U.S. national team coach Mauricio Pochettino faces his first defeat in a 2-0 friendly loss to rivals Mexico, missing key players like Pulisic, McKennie, and Weah.
Argentina's Mauricio Pochettino faced a tough reality in his second match as head coach of the United States national team. After a promising debut win against Panama, the U.S. succumbed to a 2-0 loss against Mexico in a friendly match. Missing core players such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Timothy Weah, the team struggled to find momentum.
"We weren't good enough. We started well, but after the first goal, we lost control," reflected Pochettino. "This is a learning experience. We’ve only been working together for ten days, so there's plenty of room for improvement. Today, Mexico was the better side and deserved to win."
Looking ahead, the U.S. faces Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals this November. They’ll enter as favorites, with the first leg set in Kingston and the return fixture in St. Louis. With MLS season concluding, Pochettino will likely have a full roster, including European-based stars.
Meanwhile, Mexico continued their strong form, extending an unbeaten streak that has lasted since June. The team delivered an impressive performance, showing why they remain a force in CONCACAF.
