Reports suggest PSG’s owner, Qatar’s Emir, is open to selling the club’s majority stake. Frustration with lack of European success drives potential ownership change.

Paris Saint-Germain could soon undergo a major ownership shakeup, as sources close to Doha’s ruling circles claim that Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar and owner of PSG, is willing to sell the club for the right price.

According to L’Équipe, while this doesn’t mean Qatar intends to completely withdraw from PSG, they are ready to part with a majority stake if a lucrative offer emerges. The driving force behind this shift appears to be a decline in interest in football following Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 World Cup. As a result, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), which owns PSG, no longer sees the Parisian club as a top priority, particularly after abandoning their pursuit of Manchester United.

The report highlights a growing disconnect between QSI and the PSG project. One key reason for this is frustration with the club’s "superstar era," which, despite massive spending, has failed to deliver the ultimate goal: European dominance.

While QSI continues to absorb financial losses, the focus has shifted to cutting costs and making the organization more financially sustainable. One step in that direction could be the sale of a 12.5% stake in the club for €500 million to the U.S. investment fund Arctos Partners.

QSI has been the majority owner of PSG since 2011, a period marked by domestic dominance with 10 Ligue 1 titles and 7 French Cup trophies, as well as a Champions League final appearance in 2019/20.
