Mathys Tel officially joined Tottenham, initially on loan from Bayern Munich, with the option to buy for €55 million.
The loan deal alone cost Spurs €10 million, a significant fee, but the statistics suggest the investment may be justified.
Teenage talents: Tel among Europe's elite
Since the start of the 2023/24 season, only one teenage player in Europe’s top five leagues has been involved in more goals than Tel. The 18-year-old Frenchman has contributed to 17 goals and assists in that period, matching Savinho (Girona/Manchester City) but with almost 1,000 minutes less on the pitch.
At the top of the list is Lamine Yamal. The Barcelona wonderkid has recorded 37 goal contributions, but has required over 5,000 minutes to achieve the feat.
Premier League move despite heavy interest
There was considerable interest in Tel during the January transfer window. Manchester United were initially keen, but they failed to meet Bayern’s loan terms. Chelsea made a late bid, even as Tel was already at the airport, but the forward had already agreed to join Tottenham and rejected the Blues.
How will Tel adapt to English football?
With more playing time expected at Tottenham, all eyes will be on how quickly Tel can adapt to the Premier League. If his goal-scoring record continues, Spurs may have landed one of Europe’s brightest young stars.
