Memphis Depay, now with Corinthians, was sentenced to four months in prison for DUI in Monaco. His sentence is suspended, but he faces fines and a driving ban.
Memphis Depay, the high-profile signing for Corinthians, has been sentenced to four months in prison by the French Public Prosecutor’s Office for driving under the influence of alcohol in Monaco. The Dutch international, renowned for his stints at European giants and his performances for the Netherlands national team, now faces legal trouble that has cast a shadow over his promising start in Brazil.
The incident occurred on August 6, 2024, during Depay's summer vacation, before he had signed with Corinthians. According to reports from Monaco’s media, confirmed by the Public Prosecutor, Depay was caught driving a Rolls-Royce recklessly through the streets of the Principality, leading to his stop by authorities at Place d'Armes.
A breathalyzer test revealed 1.01 mg/l of exhaled air, equivalent to over 2g of alcohol per liter of blood—well above legal limits. This resulted in his prosecution and subsequent conviction.
Will Depay face prison time?
Depay’s four-month prison sentence has been suspended, contingent on his compliance with certain conditions. However, he has been ordered to pay a €9,000 fine (approximately R$ 54,000) and has been banned from driving in Monaco for two years.
Despite the legal issues, Depay has been thriving on the field since joining Corinthians, delivering stellar performances and quickly endearing himself to the Fiel (Corinthians' passionate fan base). Nonetheless, this conviction may affect his off-pitch image, even if it doesn’t immediately impact his playing career.
