Mauricio Pochettino's two-year contract as U.S. head coach will earn him $12 million, the highest salary in the history of the U.S. national team, funded by two American billionaires.
Former Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino has officially been named the new manager of the United States national football team, ahead of the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States. According to ESPN, Pochettino has signed a two-year contract worth $12 million, making him the highest-paid coach in the history of the U.S. national team.
His salary is being backed by Kenneth C. Griffin and Scott Goodwin, two American billionaires who are helping finance his appointment. Pochettino, who previously managed PSG and Tottenham, expressed that his decision to join the U.S. team wasn’t just about football but also about the unique opportunity and journey the team is on.
"The energy, passion, and hunger to achieve something truly historic are what inspired me. I see a group of players full of talent and potential, and together we will build something special that the entire nation can be proud of," said Pochettino during his media unveiling.
The U.S. has been without a permanent manager since Gregg Berhalter was let go following the team’s early exit from the Copa America on home soil in July. After a public dispute with rising star Gio Reyna, Berhalter’s second tenure as coach came to an end, and the U.S. Soccer Federation turned to Pochettino to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup.
The U.S. will play upcoming friendlies against Panama on October 12 and Mexico three days later, marking the beginning of Pochettino's new journey with the team.
