Former Tottenham, Chelsea, and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to become the new head coach of the U.S. national team, according to reports from American media.
The United States Soccer Federation has decided to part ways with Gregg Berhalter following a disappointing performance at the Copa America, and they have announced their intention to appoint a high-profile international coach in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
Their first choice was former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who turned down the offer from the U.S. However, multiple American media outlets now report that 52-year-old Argentine Mauricio Pochettino will be the new head coach of the U.S. national team, fitting the criteria set by the federation.
Matt Crocker, the sporting director of the U.S. Soccer Federation, played a key role in the appointment. Crocker previously worked with Pochettino at Southampton, where Pochettino was the head coach and Crocker served as the sporting director.
The U.S. national team was eliminated in the group stage of the Copa America, but with the 2026 World Cup set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the Americans are looking to build a strong squad under Pochettino's leadership.
