Porto president André Villas-Boas expressed disappointment over Benfica and Sporting's failure to offer condolences following the death of club legend Pinto da Costa.

The deep-rooted rivalry among Portugal’s Big Three—Benfica, Porto, and Sporting—is well known, but the lack of sportsmanship displayed following the death of legendary Porto president Pinto da Costa has sparked criticism.

Over the weekend, Pinto da Costa passed away at the age of 88. He led Porto for an astonishing 42 years, guiding the club to two Champions League titles and transforming it into a dominant force in Portuguese football.

However, despite his undeniable impact, neither Benfica nor Sporting have publicly acknowledged his passing or offered condolences—a silence that has shocked Porto’s leadership.

Porto’s new president, André Villas-Boas, did not hide his disappointment at the lack of recognition from the Lisbon giants.

"It is difficult to accept such behavior, especially considering that we all work together to improve Portuguese football, create business opportunities, and enhance the league’s reputation."

"Pinto da Costa’s passing is a painful loss for Porto, and we deeply regret that neither of the Lisbon clubs has offered condolences. Tomorrow, the greatest president in Porto’s history will be laid to rest, and we will see if Benfica or Sporting send representatives to the funeral," Villas-Boas stated.

A rivalry that goes beyond football

Pinto da Costa’s controversial tenure often put him at odds with Benfica and Sporting, and his leadership helped shift Portugal’s football power balance in Porto’s favor.

While his legacy is polarizing, his contributions to the game are undeniable—making the silence from Portugal’s other major clubs particularly striking.
