Mbappe admits he considered staying at PSG to support his younger brother’s career, prioritizing family over his footballing dream.
Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he almost turned down his long-awaited move to Real Madrid this summer to safeguard his younger brother Ethan Mbappe’s future at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). In a candid interview with Canal+, the French superstar shared the emotional dilemma that nearly altered his career path.
After a prolonged contract saga, Mbappe joined Real Madrid on a free transfer when his deal with PSG expired. His 17-year-old brother, Ethan, also left PSG during the summer, signing with Lille on a free transfer. However, Kylian admitted he wrestled with guilt over how his departure impacted Ethan’s standing at PSG.
"It could have happened," Mbappe said about staying at PSG. "His 'Real Madrid' was PSG. And indirectly, I took it away from him. He told me that he didn't want to stay, that it wasn't normal for them to do that to me. I told him, 'If you want to stay, I'll renew, and we'll stay for a while.'"
Mbappe went on to say that he would have sacrificed his dream of playing for Madrid to ensure Ethan’s happiness. "I would have given up my dream of Madrid for him. Ethan is my brother, you can't touch him. What's the point of signing for the best club in the world if you end your brother's career?"
Ultimately, both brothers opted to leave PSG. Ethan made his senior debut for Lille before suffering an injury, while Kylian has faced challenges adjusting to life at Real Madrid. Despite the rocky start, Mbappe remains optimistic about his future with the club.
"It hasn't been the best start to the season, but we are preparing for the trophies that will count," he explained. "At Real Madrid, we look forward to the second half of the season. That’s when you will be judged."
Mbappe is confident that he will find success at the Santiago Bernabéu, stating, "You discover a new context, a new club, climate, and environment. It’s more about observing. I am going to succeed here."
