JJ Gabriel will not make his Manchester United senior debut against Wrexham after being left out of the travelling squad for the club’s opening pre-season friendly.
United begin preparations for the 2026-27 campaign at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium, but one of the most exciting players in the academy has remained in Manchester.
The club officially confirmed a 25-man travelling group, correcting initial reports that described the squad as containing 26 players.
Gabriel returned to Carrington for pre-season training but has not yet joined Michael Carrick’s first-team group on a full-time basis.
According to reports, the 15-year-old has instead been completing an individual programme with performance coach Jack Hunter, who has also worked with Aston Villa and Netherlands defender Ian Maatsen.
There is no suggestion that Gabriel has suffered a serious injury. United are simply managing the physical development and workload of a player who will not celebrate his 16th birthday until October.
That cautious approach is understandable. Gabriel has already progressed rapidly through the academy and attracted comparisons with some of Europe’s most celebrated young talents.
He became the youngest player to represent United’s under-18 side when he made his debut at 14 and scored twice against Leeds United. He was subsequently named the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season and received United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.
Supporters hoped his progress might lead to an appearance against Wrexham, particularly with several senior internationals still recovering from the World Cup.
The wait will continue, but United’s squad still contains several young players and one major new arrival.
Andrey Santos, signed from Chelsea for a reported initial fee of £48 million, has travelled to Finland and is in line to make his unofficial debut.
Bryan Mbeumo, Joshua Zirkzee and academy striker Chido Obi are among the attacking options. Shea Lacey, Ethan Wheatley, and Ethan Williams have also been included.

The selection combines established first-team players with academy prospects, allowing Carrick to assess his options before the competitive season begins.
Gabriel’s next possible opportunity could arrive against Rosenborg in Norway on July 24. United will also face Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain later in their European pre-season programme.
His participation in any of those matches will depend on his physical readiness and whether Carrick decides that exposure to senior football is appropriate.
Gabriel’s omission is a disappointment for supporters rather than a major setback. United’s priority is ensuring that their exceptional 15-year-old reaches the senior team at the right moment.
