Seko Fofana, the experienced midfielder and Ivory Coast international, is making his return to Ligue 1 after a challenging spell in Saudi Arabia.
The 29-year-old is joining Rennes for a reported fee of €20 million, signaling the club's intent to strengthen their midfield.
Fofana, who previously excelled with Lens, moved to Al Nassr last summer but struggled to adapt. He later joined Al Ettifaq on loan, and now, his transfer back to France is set to be finalized, with reports confirming that he has successfully passed his medical at Rennes.
Currently sitting in 12th place in Ligue 1, Rennes has had a disappointing season. The team has a neutral goal difference, scoring and conceding 20 goals after 15 matches. Interestingly, teams like Auxerre and Toulouse, higher in the standings, share the same goal difference. Rennes hopes that Fofana’s return will provide the spark needed to improve their performance.
Fofana's career began in the youth systems of Lorient and Manchester City. In 2016, he moved to Udinese, and later to Lens, where he helped the club qualify for the Champions League. At the international level, Fofana has represented Ivory Coast since 2017, winning the African Cup of Nations this year and playing in the final.
With this ambitious signing, Rennes is showing their determination to climb higher in Ligue 1. Fofana's return to familiar territory could be the key to turning their season around.
