Jonathan Klinsmann faces a long recovery after sustaining a serious neck injury during Cesena’s Serie B clash with Palermo.
Jonathan Klinsmann, son of Jürgen Klinsmann, has suffered a serious neck injury after a heavy collision during a Serie B match.
The Cesena goalkeeper was injured late in the game against Palermo, forcing medical staff to rush onto the pitch before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Initial concerns focused on a head injury, further medical tests confirmed a more serious issue.
Cesena later released an official update confirming a fracture of the first cervical vertebra, along with head trauma.
"Following the in-game incident, Jonathan Klinsmann sustained a head wound and cervical trauma. Tests have detected a fracture at the level of the first cervical vertebra," the club stated.
The 29-year-old will now undergo further examinations and a specialist neurosurgical consultation.
Manager Ashley Cole spoke shortly after the match:
"He was taken to hospital by ambulance. The medical staff reassured us about his general condition, but we are waiting for full updates," he said.
Klinsmann’s agent Marco De Marchi later confirmed the seriousness of the situation.
"The road to recovery will be a long one," he said.
Klinsmann joined Cesena in 2024 after spells with Hertha Berlin, St. Gallen and LA Galaxy. He has made 66 appearances for the Italian club and established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper.
He has also been involved with the United States national team, earning his first senior call-up under Mauricio Pochettino, though he is still waiting for his debut.
Cesena, currently eighth in the table, will now finish the season without their starting goalkeeper, with only three matches remaining.
