The Copa Sudamericana clash between Independiente and Universidad de Chile was abandoned amid brutal riots, with fans stabbed, beaten, forced to drink urine, and reports of sexual violence.

Shocking violence erupted in Argentina on Wednesday night, forcing the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 clash between Independiente and Universidad de Chile to be abandoned in Buenos Aires.

The second leg at the Libertadores de América stadium descended into chaos at halftime, with rival supporters clashing violently. Objects were hurled from the stands, including broken chairs, toilet parts and even a stun bomb.

According to ESPN, at least 10 people were seriously injured, with one fan requiring surgery after falling from the stands. New reports from Latinus reveal that fans were also subjected to disturbing acts of abuse.

Witnesses claim Universidad de Chile fans broke into stadium facilities and used objects found inside to attack home supporters. Horrifying details include fans being forced to drink urine, an employee stabbed, and one person reportedly sexually assaulted. Three stadium employees were also attacked during the riots.

Conmebol later confirmed that the game was halted because the hosts and local authorities could not guarantee safety. At the time of suspension, the score was 1-1, with the Chilean side leading 2-1 on aggregate.

The lack of a timely police and security response has also come under fire, with investigations now expected into how the violence was able to spiral so far out of control.
