Girona have confirmed the signing of Argentine attacker Claudio “Diablito” Echeverri on loan from Manchester City until the end of the season.
Girona have officially announced the arrival of Argentine forward Claudio Echeverri, who joins the Catalan side on loan from Manchester City until the end of the current season.
The deal was finalised only hours before Girona’s recent away match against Espanyol, as the club waited to complete the registration process. Echeverri was already present at the stadium, pending confirmation of Jhon Solis’s departure.
A delayed but desired move
Girona and Manchester City had hoped to bring Echeverri to Montilivi last summer, with both clubs aligned on the move. However, following advice from his representatives, the player instead opted for a switch to Bayer Leverkusen, attracted by the opportunity to play UEFA Champions League football.
That first European spell proved challenging. Echeverri played a limited role in Germany, making 11 appearances and logging just 271 minutes across all competitions, never fully establishing himself in the squad.
What Echeverri brings to Girona
Now 19, the former River Plate academy product arrives at a Girona side on an upward trajectory but still searching for greater attacking efficiency. The coaching staff believe Echeverri’s verticality, flair and confidence in one-on-one situations can inject much-needed unpredictability into the final third.
Head coach Michel Sanchez gains an additional attacking option following Solís’ confirmed transfer to Birmingham City, which freed up one of Girona’s non-EU registration slots.
Squad planning continues
Girona’s work in the market is not expected to stop there. Reinforcements in midfield remain a priority, with Fran Beltran set to arrive from Celta Vigo for a symbolic fee, as his contract expires on 30 June.
Further departures are also anticipated, including Dominik Livakovic, to make room for Marc-Andre ter Stegen, while Girona are still targeting another midfielder and a left-footed centre-back capable of covering at full-back — competition currently lacking for Alex Moreno.
