Gary Lineker made a surprise return to BBC Sport following England's dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Although the match was broadcast by ITV, the BBC aired its own post-match analysis featuring Wayne Rooney, Ellen White, and Micah Richards, who joined the discussion live from New York.
The panel was debating England's controversial penalty, which was eventually overturned following a VAR review, when Richards was suddenly interrupted by an unexpected guest.
Wearing a bright red England shirt, Lineker stepped into the frame and immediately gave his verdict.
"Definitely a penalty," Lineker said, leaving Richards visibly surprised before adding, "Come on England. Nice to see you all there."
The brief appearance quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the broadcast.
Before Lineker signed off, Rooney could not resist teasing his former England teammate.
"Top's a bit snug there, Gaz," Rooney joked, drawing laughter from the studio.
Lineker ended his long run as the face of Match of the Day after the 2024-25 season. He had originally been expected to remain with the BBC through the World Cup, but his departure came earlier than planned after both sides agreed his position had become untenable following controversy surrounding one of his social media posts.
Since leaving the BBC, Lineker has focused on The Rest Is Football podcast alongside Micah Richards and Alan Shearer. During the World Cup, the popular show has also been released in a video format through Netflix.
