Joe Bryan has announced his retirement from professional football at 32, six years after his unforgettable two-goal performance sent Fulham into the Premier League.

Former Fulham defender Joe Bryan has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of just 32.
The English defender confirmed his decision in an emotional message on social media, explaining that although his career did not end as he had hoped, he feels ready to begin the next stage of his life.
"It's disappeared in the blink of an eye, but now feels like the right time to bring the curtain down on my playing career," Bryan wrote.
"Whilst not the perfect ending everyone hopes for, I am at peace with my decision to retire and move into the next phase of my life."
A career that started at eight years old
Bryan was born in Bristol and joined Bristol City's academy when he was only eight.
He signed his first professional contract in 2011 and made his senior debut at 18 in a victory against Leicester City.
After loan spells with Bath City and Plymouth Argyle, Bryan established himself as an important member of Bristol City's first team.
He eventually made 230 appearances for his hometown club before earning a move to the Premier League.
Fulham signed him in the summer of 2018, beginning the chapter of his career for which he will be remembered most.
One unforgettable night made Bryan a Fulham hero
Bryan permanently wrote his name into Fulham history during the 2020 Championship play-off final against Brentford at Wembley.
With the match goalless in extra time, Bryan spotted Brentford goalkeeper David Raya expecting a cross and produced an audacious free-kick from around 40 yards to give Fulham the lead.
He was not finished.
Bryan scored again later in extra time as Scott Parker's side won 2-1 and secured promotion to the Premier League.
For a defender who was never known primarily for scoring goals, delivering twice in one of the biggest matches of Fulham's season made the achievement even more memorable.
Bryan eventually accumulated 117 appearances for Fulham.
France and Millwall followed
After losing his regular place at Fulham, Bryan spent a season on loan with French club Nice in Ligue 1.
He then joined Millwall in the summer of 2023, which proved to be the final club of his professional career.
Looking back on his journey, Bryan thanked the people who remained alongside him through both the successful and difficult periods.
"I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me through each failure, each success, each setback and each triumph. It has been a truly special journey."
Former teammates pay tribute
Messages quickly arrived from former teammates and clubs following Bryan's announcement.
Fulham captain Tom Cairney wrote: "Congrats mate, Fulham ledge. Enjoy the next part of your life, man."
Former Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel added: "Congratulations mate, what a career."
Fulham described Bryan as " a Fulham hero", while Millwall wished their former defender well for whatever comes next.
Bryan's professional career has therefore ended earlier than many would have expected, at only 32.
But at Fulham, one night will ensure his name is remembered for decades: two goals at Wembley, including an extraordinary 40-yard free-kick, that sent the club back to the Premier League.
