Former Manchester City manager Mark Hughes takes over at Carlisle United, aiming to save the League Two club from relegation with 18 games left.

Mark Hughes, the former Manchester City manager, has been appointed as the new head coach of Carlisle United, a team competing in England’s League Two.

The 61-year-old takes charge at Brunton Park following the dismissal of Mike Williamson, whose five-month tenure ended on the final day of the transfer window. Hughes was selected over other strong candidates, including former Northampton Town boss Jon Brady.

Hughes, who last managed Bradford City before being sacked in October 2023, now faces the challenge of steering Carlisle clear of relegation. The team currently sits five points from safety with 18 matches remaining. His first game at the helm will be against Grimsby Town.

The Piatak family, owners of Carlisle United, and the club's directors expressed confidence that Hughes is the right man to lead them out of the drop zone. His appointment came unexpectedly, as betting markets abruptly suspended wagers on his hiring just hours before the official announcement.

Hughes has signed a permanent contract, marking his return to management after his stint with Bradford, where he oversaw their relegation to League Two in 2022. His managerial career includes roles at Wales’ national team, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Stoke City, and Southampton.
