Flamengo rejects Zenit's €18M bid for Gerson, reaffirming its commitment to retaining key players. The midfielder remains under contract until 2027, despite salary concerns.
Zenit St. Petersburg has made an €18 million offer for Gerson, but Flamengo has no intention of selling the midfielder during this transfer window. The club has reaffirmed its stance on keeping key players despite continued interest from European clubs.
Flamengo’s firm stance
The report, first revealed by ge, was followed by Flamengo's official statement clarifying its position:
"The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo reiterates that no player considered essential for the club will be transferred during this window, as already stated by Technical Director José Boto. Flamengo regularly receives inquiries about its players, but this decision will remain unchanged."
While a departure for Gerson remains unlikely, the offer comes at a time when his father and agent, Marcão, has been pushing for a salary increase. In a recent interview, Marcão claimed that Gerson earns "one of the lowest salaries among Flamengo's elite players."
Gerson's situation at Flamengo
Gerson, 27, is under contract with Flamengo until the end of 2027. The club reacquired him in 2023 for €15 million, and since then, he has not renewed his deal despite his growing importance as captain.
Flamengo has taken a conservative approach in this transfer window, prioritizing squad stability over major reinforcements. The club has only signed Danilo (on a free transfer) and Juninho for €5 million. Selling Gerson is not part of the plan, especially given the recent departures of David Luiz and Gabigol, as well as the transfers of Fabrício Bruno (€7 million to Cruzeiro) and Carlos Alcaraz (loaned to Everton with a purchase obligation).
With Zenit’s offer officially rejected, Flamengo remains committed to keeping its core players as it competes for major titles in 2024.
