Bayern Munich’s DFB-Pokal woes continue after their elimination by Bayer Leverkusen, marking the fifth consecutive season without a domestic cup trophy.
For the fifth consecutive season, Bayern Munich will finish without the DFB-Pokal trophy, a competition they once dominated. The club’s last domestic double came in 2020, during a season overshadowed by the global pandemic. Since then, the Bavarian giants have failed to replicate that success in the cup, despite continuing to excel in the Bundesliga, where they’ve claimed three league titles in the last four seasons.
The latest disappointment came last night, as Bayern were eliminated by Bayer Leverkusen. The match took a dramatic turn early on when Manuel Neuer, Bayern’s experienced goalkeeper, was sent off with a red card. Leverkusen capitalized, delivering another blow to Bayern’s hopes of ending their Pokal drought.
Bayern’s cup performances over the past five seasons paint a bleak picture. Last year, they were eliminated in the second round, and the season before that saw them crash out in the quarterfinals. In both 2021 and 2022, they didn’t progress past the second round.
While Bayern remains a powerhouse in German football, their recent struggles in the DFB-Pokal leave club legends and fans alike questioning how a team so dominant in the league can falter so consistently in cup competitions.
