Eljif Elmas struggles at RB Leipzig, with Newcastle and Lazio interested in signing the North Macedonian international in January.
Eljif Elmas, the North Macedonian midfielder, is facing a tough situation at RB Leipzig. After being left out of the squad by coach Marco Rose for technical reasons in a match against Werder Bremen, it seems increasingly likely that Elmas will need to find a new club during the January transfer window. According to Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle United has made an offer to bring the midfielder to the Premier League, while Lazio is also said to be interested, as reported by Sky Sport Germany.
Elmas’s time in the Bundesliga has been far from ideal. Signed by Leipzig for approximately €25 million in January last year, he played only 255 minutes in the league during his first season. This campaign has been equally challenging, with Elmas making just six appearances across all competitions (Bundesliga, Champions League, and Cup) for a total of 89 minutes.
Despite his struggles at Leipzig, Elmas boasts a solid track record at the international level. The midfielder, born in 1999, has made 65 appearances and scored 13 goals for North Macedonia’s senior national team. Earlier in his career, he played for Rabotnički, Fenerbahçe, and Napoli, where he impressed before moving to Germany.
While Newcastle is keen to bring Elmas to England, Lazio may provide a tempting alternative with a potential return to Serie A, where Elmas previously thrived. The January transfer window will likely determine the next step for the talented midfielder.
