Dutch footballer Quincy Promes, convicted of drug trafficking in the Netherlands, has signed with Dubai United in the UAE while evading a prison sentence.
Former Dutch international Quincy Promes has been making headlines for years, not just for his football skills, but for his legal troubles. Now, he's signed a contract with Dubai United, a second-division club in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), even as he continues to evade a 7.5-year prison sentence back in his homeland.
Promes, who previously played for Ajax, Sevilla, and Spartak Moscow, was convicted in the Netherlands for his involvement in drug trafficking. However, he has managed to avoid serving his sentence by staying out of Dutch jurisdiction. Initially, Russia refused to extradite him due to diplomatic tensions, and now, despite being arrested for a traffic accident in the UAE, he's once again eluding the law.
As the UAE and the Netherlands do not have an extradition agreement, Promes remains free in the Gulf country. His latest move suggests that he plans to continue his career in the UAE for the foreseeable future, with Dubai United already registering him as their newest player.
