From his early days in Hamilton to starring in the Premier League, Chris Wood’s remarkable story is one of resilience, talent, and an unwavering connection to his roots.

In a country where rugby reigns supreme, Chris Wood has forged a unique path, becoming a trailblazer for New Zealand football on the global stage. Born in Hamilton and raised in a family with deep ties to the Caribbean, Wood’s journey to becoming a star for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League is nothing short of extraordinary.

Making waves in the Premier League

Wood’s influence at Forest has been significant, helping propel the club to fourth place in the Premier League standings, ahead of reigning champions Manchester City. With an impressive tally of 10 goals this season, he has rekindled hopes of a European campaign—the club’s first since the 1995-96 season.

"The impact on football back in New Zealand has been incredible," says former All Whites player Mike Groom. "Chris was born to find the back of the net, a talent that can't be taught. He stands as a beacon for aspiring players here, highlighting the endless opportunities that lie ahead."

A family rooted in resilience

Wood’s family history adds depth to his story. His paternal grandfather, Sterry Cole, emigrated from Saint Kitts and Nevis to England in 1960, leaving behind a modest stone home in Basseterre. Despite the cultural shock, Sterry adapted to life in Manchester and worked in construction, laying the foundation for future generations.

Football became a passion for Wood early on. As a boyhood Manchester United fan, he idolized Wayne Rooney, often mimicking the England star in his garden. However, it was Manchester City who spotted his potential when he was just eight years old. Despite his allegiance to United, Wood joined City, and his grandfather recalls how he would wear a United shirt beneath his City training kit in those early days.

Rising through the ranks

Wood’s professional career began at West Bromwich Albion, and he went on to play for 12 clubs, including Leeds United, Burnley, Leicester City, and Newcastle United. Along the way, he accumulated valuable experience and honed his skills, becoming a clinical finisher with an impressive 6ft 3in frame.

Despite spending most of his life in the UK, Wood has remained closely connected to his homeland. With a record 41 goals in 80 appearances for the All Whites, he frequently makes the long journey back to New Zealand to represent his country in international competitions. During the most recent international break, he scored twice against Vanuatu in Hamilton and followed it up with a hat-trick against Samoa in Auckland.

Inspiring the next generation

Groom, who first noticed Wood’s potential when he was just nine years old, recalls the striker’s extraordinary performances during his school days at St Paul’s Collegiate. "We weren’t at the top level then, but Chris was integral to our rise. Down 3-0 with just 15 minutes to go, Chris scored a hat-trick, and we triumphed in penalties. Later, he calmly informed me, ‘There’s our top-10 finish, coach.’ I was blown away."

Another key figure in Wood’s development was Roger Wilkinson, an English coach who recommended him for a trial at West Brom. Wilkinson recalls, "Chris was a natural—magic. He would find space in the box and finish effortlessly. Tony Mowbray trusted him early on, and the rest is history."

A national hero

Wood’s rise to prominence has made him a household name in New Zealand. His achievements have inspired a new generation of footballers in a country traditionally dominated by rugby. With Auckland FC making waves in the A-League and football’s popularity on the rise, Wood’s success comes at a pivotal moment for the sport in New Zealand.

Looking ahead

As Nottingham Forest fans anxiously await news of Wood’s contract renewal, Groom remains confident about the striker’s future. "He has brought much to Forest, and vice versa. From the scenic banks of the Waikato to the Trent, Chris Wood's tale at Forest still has many chapters left to unfold."
