Angel Di Maria has matched Lionel Messi's Champions League assist record and is now closing in on Cristiano Ronaldo for the all-time lead.
Argentinian veteran Angel Di Maria continues to shine on Europe’s biggest stage despite his age. The experienced winger is on the verge of breaking a major Champions League record.
Last night, Di Maria delivered an outstanding performance in Benfica’s narrow win over Monaco at the Stade Louis II. The winger provided two assists, bringing his total in the competition to 41 and equaling the tally of fellow Argentinian star Lionel Messi. Only two players in history have more assists in the Champions League.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs share the current record with 42 assists each. Di Maria now needs just two more to claim the top spot outright.
In the next round of the Champions League group stage, Benfica will face Bologna, followed by high-stakes matches against Barcelona and Juventus. Di Maria is also excelling domestically this season, with eight goals and five assists in 16 appearances.
This is Di Maria’s second stint with Benfica, having previously played for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus.
