Former brilliant Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas has expressed doubts about a statistical metric that often characterizes the play of midfielders today.
Former Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona, and Spain national team star Cesc Fabregas was renowned for his excellent technique, game vision, and high pass completion rate.
Fabregas, now a retired player and aspiring coach, has embarked on an interesting project with ambitious Como. In a conversation with BBC, he discussed the often-cited pass completion percentage that is used to highlight the virtues of midfielders.
Fabregas believes that such an emphasis is misleading.
"The greatest virtue of a midfielder is the ability to play forward. Today, you see all sorts of statistics everywhere, like someone having a 100% pass completion rate. Fine, but show me the video clips of those passes," Fabregas said.
"Are these passes to central defenders, nearby midfielders, or are they line-breaking passes that make things happen?" he added.
