Carlo Ancelotti reflects on his biggest career mistake, admitting he prioritized salary over loyalty during his first stint with Real Madrid. He also shares insights on modern footballers and his coaching philosophy.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has revealed what he considers his biggest career mistake, admitting it took place during his first stint at the club. Despite a recent 4-0 victory over Osasuna, Madrid has struggled this season, highlighted by a painful 4-0 defeat to Barcelona and a 3-1 loss to Milan at home.

In an interview with France Football, Ancelotti, who has managed some of the world’s most prestigious clubs, reflected on his career. When asked about any regrets, he confessed: “It’s impossible to make only good decisions over 30 years. For example, I made a bad decision here in Madrid after my first year.” He explained, “I was close to extending my contract. The club wanted to keep me, but I was too focused on my salary. That was a mistake, the worst I could make.”

Ancelotti’s first season with Madrid in 2013/14 led to La Decima, their long-awaited tenth Champions League title. However, he left the club a year later. Following stints with Bayern, Napoli, and Everton, he returned to Madrid in 2021, adding two more Champions League titles to his name. Despite his successes, Ancelotti has faced criticism for Madrid’s recent form.

When discussing his career highs, Ancelotti named Milan and Real Madrid as his most memorable clubs. He said, “I could list the best clubs: Milan and Real.” However, he refrained from choosing an all-time best XI, explaining, “It’s impossible. I’ve had the honor to coach fantastic players and teams.”

Managing star-studded rosters in one of the world’s largest clubs isn’t always easy. Ancelotti has learned how to deal with strong personalities and egos. In an interview with L’Equipe, he shared a humorous but revealing anecdote about the current generation of players. “This new generation has a huge problem—they’re addicted to their phones,” he said.

Ancelotti recalled how he once joked, “I’m tired of seeing you always on your phones in the dressing room. From now on, no more phones.” When his players asked if he was serious, he responded with a “dead serious” expression. “After training, the captain came to my office and said, ‘You can’t do this to us.’ Imagine that,” he laughed.
