Barcelona faces a crucial month ahead in the Copa del Rey, La Liga, and Champions League without key defender Inigo Martinez, who is out with a hamstring injury.
Inigo Martinez, a key member of Barcelona’s defensive line, will be out for approximately a month after suffering a right hamstring injury. The experienced 33-year-old is set to miss critical fixtures against Real Betis in the Copa del Rey, Getafe in La Liga, and Benfica in the Champions League.
The injury comes as a significant blow to Barcelona, who are preparing for a demanding schedule in all competitions. Martinez, who has been a regular starter under coach Hansi Flick, is considered an important part of the team’s defense. The German tactician has shown great trust in Martinez, who has only missed one La Liga match this season—a defeat against Osasuna in the 8th round.
Martinez joined Barcelona on a free transfer in 2023, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season. However, his deal includes a clause for an automatic one-year extension if he plays a specific number of matches. According to reports, he must participate in at least 60 percent of Barcelona’s games, spending a minimum of 45 minutes on the pitch in each. Given his current status, this target appears achievable once he returns from injury.
So far, Martinez has left the field early only twice this season, both times after the 80th minute. His consistent presence on the pitch highlights his importance to the team, and Barcelona will be keen to have him back as soon as possible.
Barcelona will host Real Betis tomorrow night (9:00 p.m.) in the Copa del Rey. The Catalan club is currently third in the La Liga standings and will aim to maintain their strong form despite Martinez’s absence. With key matches in multiple competitions on the horizon, coach Flick will need to find defensive solutions to navigate this challenging period.
