Paul Scholes questioned Ruben Amorim’s decision to play Patrick Dorgu out of position during Manchester United’s 2-1 FA Cup win over Leicester City.
A goal from Bobby De Cordova-Reid put United behind at halftime, forcing Amorim to turn to his bench in the second half. Substitute Joshua Zirkzee quickly equalized before Harry Maguire netted the stoppage-time winner.
Dorgu’s unexpected role questioned
Dorgu made his debut after completing a £29.5 million transfer from Lecce. With Luke Shaw injured and Tyrell Malacia departing on loan, he was expected to fill the left-back void—an area where United have struggled.
However, Amorim opted to deploy Dorgu on the right instead, leaving Diogo Dalot on the left. The decision surprised many, including Roy Keane, who questioned it during his punditry for ITV.
"He played a lot of times for Lecce on the right and the left," Amorim explained. "That’s one of the characteristics we pay a lot of attention to. He was a little anxious with the first touch of the ball. This is a different league, a different speed, but he did well."
Amorim defends tactical choice
Amorim insisted that Dorgu’s versatility was a key factor in his signing.
"If you have seen Dorgu’s history, he played a lot of games on the right. We need wingers who can play both sides, like Dalot," he added. "Sometimes you need a left foot on the right side to come in and connect differently, and sometimes a right foot to cross more balls."
