Former Barcelona right-back Emerson Royal, who last played in the English Premier League, is now set to compete in Italy’s Serie A as a member of AC Milan.

Italian giant AC Milan will enter the new season with a new coach, as Paulo Fonseca took over the reins this summer. Fonseca, previously known for his work with Lille in France, including matches against Ljubljana’s Olimpija in the UEFA Conference League, now leads Milan. Today, the club confirmed its fifth summer signing, with Emerson Royal joining the squad.

The 25-year-old Brazilian right-back arrives from Tottenham, costing Milan approximately €15 million.

Emerson’s European journey began in 2019 when he was brought to Barcelona, and before moving to Tottenham, he also played for Real Betis. Over the past three years with the London club, he made over 100 appearances and has earned 10 caps for the Brazilian national team.

Last season, under coach Pioli, Milan finished second in Serie A—a respectable result, though they trailed city rivals Inter by a massive 19 points. Fonseca’s task will be to lead the team to a new Serie A title. The new league campaign for the Rossoneri kicks off on Saturday against Monza.

AC Milan has announced that their new signing, Emerson Royal, will wear the number 22 jersey—a number once worn by the iconic Brazilian Kaka.
