In the Europa League Group B second-round match, AEK played a 1:1 draw against Ajax in Athens, in front of their fans.
A banner displayed by Greek fans at the OPAP Arena, reading "Kosovo is Albania," sparked a huge scandal in Serbia and stirred controversy in Greece as well. AEK issued a statement regarding the banner:
"AEK expresses disgust and unequivocally condemns the appearance of a banner with extremely nationalist content at our stadium, even if it was for a few seconds, which has nothing to do with our club's history and what it stands for."
"Regarding this specific incident, we are taking action to find the individuals responsible for this scene which, we repeat, rightly disturbed our fans, who have distanced themselves from it. We will find those responsible and ban them from entering the stadium."
Greek media reported that two individuals who brought the controversial banner into the stadium have been identified and will be permanently banned from AEK's stadium. The club identified the two suspects with the help of police using security cameras at the stadium.
